CHARACTER
» Name: Ash
» Fandom: Avalon (2001 film)
» Reference: Wikipedia actually has a pretty exhaustive plot summary as of this writing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon_(20 01_film)
» Canon Point: After Ash has defeated the Ghost and enters the Special A level.
» Gender: Physically female, mentally pretty androgynous
» Orientation: Asexual with a slight, SLIGHT heterosexual bent.
Ash is depicted as being very much a switched off, isolated individual: she lives alone with just her dog, is distrustworthy of men and women alike, and has a complex about people in general. That is to say, she identifies Avalon as the real world for her, while the physical world seems grotesque and alien-- to such an extent that she can't even watch people eating without feeling disgusted.
That said, it's implied that she has some sort of either friendship or romantic affection for the captain of her former group, Murphy, enough to track him down in the physical world and investigate the mystery of his coma within the game. When Ash confronts Murphy in Class Real (a sort of hidden stage that precisely replicates reality, where Murphy's consciousness has been taken), she is unwilling to fight him, knowing that he'll suffer brain death. This is the one time we see Ash's emotions really come into conflict with her mission. We also see that she is able to bear some amount of fealty for another dying comrade, enough to stay by his side during his Final Monologue, where previously she seemed to dismiss him.
So, while Ash's aversion to other people's bodily functions will probably be a major hindrance to her in Amat, she IS capable of developing friendships and romantic feelings that might overcome that. Furthermore, we do see her eating a LITTLE in the movie, so by extension we can suppose she'd be able to force herself to accept a little bit of physical intimacy, just to survive.
» Personality:
Ash is emotionally shut off and very withdrawn, showing little of herself to others. She is mission-focused, to the point of brushing off a member of her old team, Stunner, until he tells her about a challenging hidden area in the game they both play. This game, it should be mentioned, is how Ash earns her living: she is a professional player and appears to be a little proud of her talents. Early in the film, she lectures a less experienced player to go back to an easier area. She bears some resentment for another player, Bishop, who beats one of her records, and seems disappointed in herself when she is forced to withdraw from a stage at one point. Much of this stems from a sense of guilt she feels over forcing her old team, Team Wizard, to withdraw under heavy fire some months previous. She believes this incident broke apart the team and disgraced Murphy, the team captain. (However, we learn that it was actually Murphy who entered the order to withdraw.)
Although she has little interest in people, we do see Ash doting on her dog (Bishop comments that her dog eats better than most people) in contrast to her own spartan diet, and she seems to enjoy art and literature as well. She appears appreciative of the operatic performance in Class Real, and is shown to be a familiar patron at the local library, apparently able to read in multiple languages (the books she checks out are written in Japanese, despite the film being set in Poland). She is also predictably adept at computers and conducting research with them.
In the real world, Ash is sullen to the point of radiating an aura of Don't Touch Me. She is incredibly antisocial, frequently refusing to engage in conversation even when asked a direct question, and often considerably skeeved by anything having to do with other people eating or drinking (and probably other human functions, but it's a PG-13 movie). In the game world, Ash is more assertive and calm but, rather than come off as withdrawn and introverted, she seems elitist and battle-hardened, a real lone wolf on a literally endless battlefield. In either setting, we see a woman who is intensely self-reliant and shuns the assistance of others, but game-Ash will grudgingly accept help when the situation calls for it.
Avalon being a very immersive fighting game played in VR, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to suggest Ash really does know how to handle an assortment of weaponry with calm ease. However, she has never actually killed anyone, and is naturally perturbed by witnessing there are real-life consequences to actions taken within the game (namely, Murphy's coma).
At the end of the movie, Ash is shaken by being goaded into murdering Murphy, but this RP character is taken from before that incident, so the trauma is not yet something she has had to deal with.
» Appearance:
Pretty much as depicted in the game world: early 30s, Caucasian, black hair with a white streak, and pale blue eyes. She wears the outfit seen in the film, a futuristic suit with a thick overcoat, hat-plus-facemask, and nightvision goggles. Here's a good replica of her costume as displayed on a mannequin: http://www.yourprops.com/view_item.p hp?movie_prop=6748 and here's a close-up of it on the actress in the film: http://www.genjipress.com/img/dvd/2 002/B0000D9PNY-049.jpg

[The video feed flicks on to show the face of a very pissed off woman, wearing heavier battle attire than you would think necessary in a place like this.]
You've outdone yourselves this times, programmers. Class Real-- what a joke. HUD-less display is a little two decades ago, however. If I find you've wiped my inventory...
Now. I'm through here. You've made your twisted little joke.
[Her face contorts briefly at the memory of something revolting. The hallucination she experienced before waking up here.]
I don't care that you've said there's no reset. Whatever thirteen-year-old boys designed this level, you will withdraw me or I am going to crash this thing's server so hard something over there in your mother's basement is going to melt. Am I clear?
